Dr Angela M Benson is Divisional Leader for Tourism and Travel and a Principal Lecturer in Tourism at the School of Service Management, University of Brighton where she has been since January 2004 having previously held the position of Senior Lecturer at the Southampton SOLENT University (1995 – 2004). In 2009 Angela was made an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Canberra, Australia. Prior to her career as an academic, she worked for 13 years in leisure and recreation, managing a range of facilities and events and was responsible for working with sporting volunteers. Angela has published over 20 articles and chapters in the areas of Volunteer Tourism, Best Value, Sustainability and Research Methods. She is the Founding Chair of the Association for Tourism and Leisure Education (ATLAS) Volunteer Tourism Research Group, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society with IBG and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
The latest research project was undertaken with Australian colleagues examining the legacy of volunteering in mega sporting events with data sets being collected at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Vancouver, Canada. This research is continuing and access is currently being negotiated for London 2012 Games and the Sochi 2014 Winter Games.
